N.E.L.A. General Information

Our association was founded many years ago for the purpose of bringing together the owners and operators of small sawmills to
talk over and help each other with the many and varied problems facing the lumber business. With the changing times, we have asked other segments of the industry to join as well, including hardwood and softwood wholesalers, distribution yards, equipment and machinery dealers, custom kiln drying and milling operations, chips and shaving dealers, box and pallet manufacturers, state university forestry departments, and others more or less connected in some way to the lumber industry, primarily in the New-England area.

Today, we have a diverse membership of approximately one hundred seventy-five active members and meet three times per year at a variety of locations. Our meetings include activities such as visits to sawmills, secondary manufacturers, distribution yards, etc. or· sometimes just "places of interest" where there is a chance for us to learn from and "broaden our horizons". We always try to include as part of our program " a discussion of lumber markets" where we call on members to offer their thoughts and observations on current activities in their particular end of the trade. This is always an important feature of our meetings and we all really learn a lot from this sharing of information and experiences of our associates and colleagues. We also invite guest speakers on occasion to address the group on various topics related to the industry.

The annual membership dues for the NELA are currently $50.00 per year. The association customarily collects the cost of lunch and dinner at our meeting: You can join our association by sending your check for this amount made out to the NELA and send it along to the address listed on our letterhead. We will then add you to our membership list and you will receive a notice in the mail of our meetings and activities, and a current list of our members. Anyone who is currently a member is welcome to bring along a guest to one of our meetings so they can get some idea of what we are about.

The NELA continues to serve a real need in our industry by providing a format for its members to meet and collectively address common needs and concerns in their own businesses and the industry as a whole. We always ·welcome new members and encourage everyone's attendance at our meetings as our members' input and ·participation is critical to the vitality of our organization. An important part of our purpose has been and will continue to be the open exchange of ·ideas· and information, and to promote and encourage friendly competition in our industry which will help us all!
